Energy Saving

What about it?

Glazing is the Achilles Heel of every building. It just can’t compare to the insulating properties of most other materials. We’ve seen single glazing being replaced by double glazing and now we’re seeing a huge roll out of triple glazing. Each time we add a new pane of glass and an air gap. This gap can be as mentioned, an air gap, or it can be filled with special gases that help slow the passage of heat from the inside of our buildings to the outside and keep the cold from outside, well, outside. There’s only so far you can go when adopting this approach. Who knows, if technology wasn’t where it is we might be looking at 5, 6, 7 or more panes of glass in our glazing units in the future!

Luckily technology has come on leaps and bounds in recent years and we’ve seen the introduction of low-e coatings, gel laminations and internal film suspension units. These advanced windows seem space aged compared to those old single pane windows of the past. But…they come with a price and usually a hefty one at that.

The most modern of thermally insulating windows are incredible and incredibly pricey with some manufacturers claiming you will get an ROI of around 35 years! That’s not really a return on investment if you ask us! Maybe one day these windows will become more “affordable” and better value for money.

For now though, there’s not much to beat the most advanced window films we’ve ever seen. As glazing technology has moved forward so have window films. From the dark tinted films of the late 90’s to what we call optically clear, spectrally selective, low-e window films of today! These films are near invisible once installed on your existing glazing and offer value for money like nothing else with an ROI in as little as 2 years!

These films work by not only blocking heat from leaving the room but also reflecting it back in during cold days. In summer when the temperatures soar, these films work incredibly well at stopping almost 50% of the suns heat entering your property!

Winter heating savings to challenge those of high quality triple glazing, summer heat gain reductions that far out perform any blinds and a hue that actually enhances your views from the inside!

Are the films for this service tinted/reflective?

Our most recommended film for energy savings has very high visible light transmittance with just enough “tint” to break harsh light, you can barely tell it’s on the window. Reflections are a common concern of a lot of our new customers. You’ll find that the interior light reflectance is marginally lower than that of glass without film and the exterior is marginally more reflective. This ensures that your view from the inside is close to perfect, by that we mean better than without film!
